Zhamira's Story
In 2020 Zhamira embarked on a journey of bravery and self-discovery transitioning to live authentically as a woman. Despite her courage, she found herself battling workplace discrimination and financial abuse, and ultimately faced eviction. More so, while living in South Carolina, Zhamira was unable to access life-saving gender affirming care.

When a friend living in Albany reached out and offered to host Zhamira, she thought she'd left her challenges behind. But, when she arrived at the airport, and her friend wasn't there to pick her up, Zhamira realized she was in a new state without anyone to help her or an idea of where she would sleep that night.

Zhamira called a local help line who connect her to IPH, where she was extended a helping hand at our South Ferry House. Here, Zhamira found a community of supporters dedicated to nurturing her resilience and empowering her to reach her goals.

With IPH case managers by her side, Zhamira has navigated applying for health insurance, food stamps, and built connections with the Pride Center and In Our Own Voices. Now, she's working to set up primary care and access to hormone replacement therapy so that she can reclaim ownership of her body and identity.

Offering more than just practical support, IPH Program Director, Tiana, ignited a spark of ambition within Zhamira who has set her sights on becoming a Peer Specialist with the Mental Health Empowerment Project. Eager to pay forward the kindness she received, Zhamira is now taking online courses to receive her certification.

As she reflects on her journey, Zhamira radiates pride in her newfound freedom to be herself. And she's paving the way for others like her, ensuring they too can find strength and support at IPH.
